Sharesight

Sharesight was founded in Wellington NZ by Tony Ryburn, Scott Ryburn, Nigel Ramsay and Marcus Baguley.

Early beginnings…

The concepts on which Sharesight has evolved were initially developed by Tony and Scott in Microsoft Excel eight years ago when Tony first began investing in NZ and Australian shares.

The idea arose when Tony became frustrated at his inability to find a suitable system that would allow him to calculate true per annum returns on his portfolio over any given time period, and to compare the performance of investments within his portfolio.

Tony also became annoyed over the increasing cost of accounting fees to file tax returns and to complete annual accounts for a family trust that owned some of the shares. Tony began completing the tax returns and the annual accounts for the family trust himself. This highlighted that, even for a modest share portfolio, it is time consuming to prepare the information required for taxation and annual accounts purposes.

As Tony’s spreadsheet evolved various shortcomings became apparent that were beyond the capabilities of a simple spreadsheet. It was recognised that modern web technology could not only be used to solve the technical shortcomings but would also allow the system to be made available to other people.

Sharesight is born…

Realising that many other sharemarket investors shared the same frustrations as Tony, Scott and Tony engaged an interaction design company to help develop the framework for a commercial version of the product in mid 2007.

A couple of months later marked a turning point when Nigel and Marcus came onboard with the passion and technical expertise required to turn the vision into reality, and Sharesight was born.

Following its NZ success, Sharesight has recently launched an Australian version of its unique online portfolio manager.
