I first started learning about SEO almost 7 years ago, before I knew it had a name.
SEO Guru
We owned a Stock Photography Bank, and I noticed that if words were repeated on a page several times, that that page was like to appear higher in search engine results, the more times the word was repeated the higher it would appear in search engine results.
Through my interest and inquisitive nature, I realised if the title of the webpage (the bit that shows at on the top bar of your browser) had the same keywords, the page didn’t need to have the word repeated so many times and yet it would still appear high, and sometimes higher, in search engines.
I tried many techniques; some worked, and many didn't. I joined SEO forums, learnt a few tricks, but found that through changing little things with the Standard SEO techniques people were using, I had better results. I made a few enemies by disagreeing with the SEO guru's of the day, and in the end stopped posting on forums, and just went and had a look to see if anything was new.
I very quickly found that watching search engines, studying sites that ranked well, and working out why they ranked well, was the best way to learn SEO. Only makes sense really. Having my own big website, about 20,000 pages, I had plenty of room for experiments, I could try 30 or 40 different things at once, and see what worked best it wasn't long before I could predict an outcome.
