Ancient Swamp Kauri Woodturning
Example of a Kauri bowl
Neville Walker is a woodturner specialising in turning the ancient swamp kauri wood found in the swamps of Northland, New Zealand. He handcrafts beautiful kauri bowls and other valuable swamp kauri gifts and heirlooms for future generations to enjoy. The ancient wood has lain in the swamps for many thousands of years, with some swamp kauri estimated to be 45,000 years old. Emma Walker uses natural items found in New Zealand, such as the paua shell (abalone), kauri leaves and New Zealand ferns to create a piece of ancient wood art that is uniquely New Zealand.
Ancient Kauri Timber
Our Swamp kauri gifts are all turned from the timber of the New Zealand Kauri tree (agathis australis) which grows exclusively here in New Zealand, and is only found in the northern parts of New Zealand. All our timber is reclaimed; most of it swamp kauri and some of it ‘left-over‘ timber from the logging days of the past centuries. From our base here in the Hokianga region, not far from the Bay of Islands, we have sourced beautiful pieces from the area around Maungatapere, not far from the Kauri Museum at Matakohe, and from farmland bordering the edge of the Puketi forest. More recently we have sourced some ancient swamp kauri from the swamplands north of Kaitaia and the large area north of Whangarei called the Hikurangi swamp.
Swamp Kauri Gifts
These individually handcrafted pieces of wooden art are heirlooms and make ideal wedding gifts, presents for 21st birthdays and special occasions, baby gifts or even as a special corporate gift. This ancient timber is unique to New Zealand, and is becoming more and more scarce. Those who possess a piece of this handcrafted swamp kauri will certainly have a precious gift to pass on to future generations.
