In the late 1950's AJ (Mac) McCabe, seeing no future in his present occupation moved his family to Stewart Island to harvest the huge Paua resource that was abundant there.
This made Mac one of the first commercial paua divers in New Zealand. From this grew the shell and meat industry of today. Mac was truly a pioneer in every sense of the word.
In 1964 Fiordland Souvenirs Ltd was formed to manufacture paua shell and jade products. This started off gradually and now in 2006 Fiordland Souvenirs Ltd has over 40 years experience working with shell. Since Mac passed away it has been run by two of his sons, Chris and Bryn McCabe.
