ETHOS Advanced Combustion Woodfire

The patented Ethos advanced combustion technology has been developed in Christchurch as part of a major effort to reduce emissions from wood fires while offering the highest heating efficiencies, in order to meet environmental regulations in both Canterbury and around New Zealand. The principal design elements of the unique Ethos technology are now producing an attractive, safe, efficient and cost-effective alternative to other conventionally designed log burners.

Design Features:
In the Ethos design, the secret of success is the use of a sophisticated secondary combustion process that ensures more complete combustion of the wood and gases, increasing the fireplace’s heating efficiency and reducing the amount of incomplete combustion products that escape the firebox in to the environment.

Unlike any other, the Ethos Multiburn firebox uses four separate paths of combustion air, all of which are preheated. The main source of air is fed directly to the burning wood, while the second is aimed immediately above the main fire to capture and ignite the incomplete combustion products that would otherwise be released into the chimney. The third and fourth sources of combustion air burn combustible gases at points in the rear of the firebox. The result is four simultaneous combustion zones and flame patterns — a visual effect that is captivating. The environmental benefits of the new technology are also impressive. The use of four combustion zones reduces emissions of incomplete combustion products by ten fold compared to a conventional log burner, enabling this new technology the environmentally friendly use of a renewable energy source. The low levels of incomplete combustion products and creosote result in a cleaner, considerably less congested flue.

The Ethos fire box is truly airtight to the room, with a special full size ceramic glass window that allows most of the infrared heat from the flame to be transmitted to the room and a hot air “sweeping” of the window to allow clear viewing – while self cleaning the window interior.

What makes the Ethos a better performer?

Aside from superior performance, the Ethos advanced combustion woodfires differ from conventional log burners in that they have better heat exchange properties. The Ethos woodfire has no interaction with air inside the house, eliminating the cool draughts normally encountered with log burners that draw their combustion air from within the room. The Ethos draws combustion air from outside the house through the revolutionary Econ-Air concentric flue system, super heating it (up to 300 degrees celcius) to ensure faster, more efficient burning.

This advanced combustion process offers the highest levels of energy efficiency — better than most other conventional log burners.

What makes us Made From New Zealand?

The Ethos Woodfire is wholly manufactured in Christchurch, New Zealand.

In order to meet strict air quality standards the patented Ethos Advanced Combustion technology was developed in Christchurch more than six years ago as part of a major effort to reduce emissions from wood fires while at the same time achieving the highest possible heating efficiencies. The principal design elements of the unique Ethos technology are now producing an attractive, safe, efficient and cost-effective alternative to other conventionally designed, adapted technology log burners.

As local councils battle to reduce chimney smoke pollution to meet Environment Ministry air quality guidelines, Ethos Woodfires remain committed to producing the cleanest and most efficient woodfires available in New Zealand.

In 2013 the MFE guidelines will be enforced and there will be severe consequences to Councils for breaches as they are seen as a significant health risk to the public. Many towns and cities throughout the country regularly exceed acceptable levels already, however pollution levels are trending down significantly in some regions. We believe that the Ethos Woodfire has made a considerable contribution to the reductions in these areas and will support efforts to drive air pollution well below accepted levels in all regions.
