Below Flow
The BUI system is a true ebb and flow or flood and drain system. Although having many similarities to capillary systems, BUI has some distinguishing features as well. The key feature is the ability of the system to drain after the irrigation has completed. The geotextile within the BUI mat conveys water; making it available to each plant on the mat. The plant can then take up as much or little water as it requires. If there are "dry" pots and "wet" pots on the same mat, then the water will be made available to the "dry" pots first; ensuring that the plants most in need receive the water they need to sustain their health and growth. Many nurseries have beds with a large variety of plants of different size, of different heights. BUI can cater for their water requirements without the need to segregate them. One Waikato nursery has some 12 varieties, ranging in height from 20 cm to over 1 metre all being irrigated via a 15 minute irrigation period.
